The Hibiscus or Bunga Raya planting campaign was launched in the year 2005 inline with the Prime Minister's aspiration to promote our National Flower - The Bunga Raya.

During the launching of the National Landscape Day on 3 March 2005, the Prime Minister called for the nation to plant Bunga Raya - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis in every part of the country to promote awareness, appreciation and to glorify the status of Bunga Raya as our National Flower. With the theme "Bunga Raya- Our Nation's Glory" , the theme promotes pride, radiance, beauty , glory and honour.

Bunga Raya - The Nation's Pride

Bunga Raya or the Hibiscus was chosen as Malaysia’s national flower on 28 July 1960 by our first Prime Minister, YTM Al-Marhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj based on the following justifications :

1) The five petals on the flower symbolizes the five principles of the Rukun Negara (National Principles) which are:

  • Belief in God
  • Loyalty to King and Country
  • Supremacy of the Constitution
  • The Rule of Law
  • Mutual respect and good social behaviour

2) The red colour symbolizes a strong economic and political climate and bravery to face any challenges.

3) The various types of Bunga Raya from the
context of colours, forms and sizes symbolizes the racial, religious and cultural diversity of its people who live in harmony under one beloved country – Malaysia.


Objectives of the Campaign

1) To increase awareness and to cultivate nation’s pride and love of our National Flower – Bunga Raya.

2) To cultivate the nation’s pride and love of our National Flower – Bunga Raya especially among the younger generation, specifically teenagers.

3) To promote national unity among Malaysians and to appreciate the meaning behind the national flower – Bunga Raya.

4) To encourage the planting of Bunga Raya nationwide and to make Bunga Raya a popular choice.

5) To encourage the production of various concepts and products from bunga raya in the field of landscape, textile, cosmetics, medicine, food and etc.

The Usage of Bunga Raya

Food : Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle) can be used to make syrup, jam, etc.

Landscape ornament : Bunga Raya or Hibiscus in the form of shrubs are popular as landscape planting.

Medicine : A few species of Bunga Raya can be used as a remedy for poison, cure headaches and fever.

Arrangement : Bunga Raya is also used in flower arrangement for interior decoration and costume enhancement.

Cosmetic : A few species of Bunga Raya can be used as skin moisturizer and for hair treatment.
