The National Tree Planting Campaign was initiated since the launch of the National Landscape Day celebration on 5 Mac 1997 by our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed.
In 1999, this programme was carried out in every state with a national level campaign launched by YB. Dato? Dr Ting Chew Peh, the then Minister of Housing & Local Government , on 8 March 1999 , at the Central Park, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya . The annual target for the year of 1999 was set to achieve 750,000 shaded trees planted nationwide.
To further strengthen the campaign, each of the states in Malaysia including the Federal Territories, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, have carried out the tree planting campaign at state level either with the budget allocated by the National Landscape Department or with its own funding.
Besides that, non-governmental agencies, private individuals and school children nationwide were encouraged to take part in this campaign which was coordinated by the local authorities for each area and by the National Landscape Department, Ministry of Housing & Local Government, for the national effort.
In the 8th Malaysia Plan (2001-2005), a total of 4 million trees were planted nationwide and it is projected in 9th Malaysia Plan (2006-2010), that a further 4 million trees will be planted. The overall target of the National Tree Planting Programme is to achieve 20 million trees in the year 2020 inline with the Government?s aspiration to make Malaysia ? The Most Beautiful Garden Nation? by the year 2020.
The National Tree Planting Campaign is to create awareness on the importance of trees in sustaining our green environment, which contributes to our healthy living environment.
